Last Friday, September 23, I signed Ryan Frazier’s pledge to campaign in a positive way, as did all the other candidates who are running for mayor of Aurora. Frazier said in a statement about the pledge that “There have been some things that have been said that we feel are unbecoming of a mayoral race. I hope this will ensure that from this point forward, all the way to Nov. 1, we’re talking about issues on how to move Aurora forward.” I like the concept of Ryan’s pledge in essence, yet believe that it should not be used to squelch legitimate discussion of the issues and of the candidates’ record of performance while in office. It is important for Aurora taxpayers to know how their representatives vote on issues that impact their city which is why I am expressing concern for Ryan’s support for giving millions of dollars in tax incentives to Gaylord Entertainment to build a convention center and hotel complex in Aurora. During last Friday’s debate, Frazier commented on the controversial Gaylord Entertainment Center development in Aurora. As many of us know, this deal was orchestrated in meetings closed to the public and Ryan Frazier was a part of them. Frazier has proudly boasted that the deal will bring 3,000 jobs to Aurora. If so, this equates to a cost of $100,000 per job. Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems as though $300 million would be better spent giving incentives to small businesses in Aurora to make improvements, expand their businesses or to hire more employees. I find curious Frazier’s recent remark that he favors the Gaylord Project but didn’t like how the ‘deal went down’.
