Shouldn’t $522 million in tax incentives go to Aurora businesses instead of one out-of-town corporation?

I’d like to hear the answer to that question above from our elected officials. Apparently, the ruling class of Aurora believes that Gaylord Entertainment, a Nashville-based corporation, should receive $522M of taxpayer funded incentives to build its hotel complex in Aurora. Two of Aurora’s city council members and Aurora mayoral candidates, Ryan Frazier and Steve Hogan, are supporters of Gaylord and its project. Each has publicly stated that jobs will come to the City of Aurora as a result of this deal. Common sense tells me that Aurora will be better served extending incentives to Aurora businesses rather than to large out-of-state corporations. It is pure speculation that $522M in tax incentives is enough to fully fund the project. How often do we hear about private projects that receive public financing and are later found to need twice or three times the funding to be viable? With the potential of budget shortfalls, it is likely that tax payers will see diminishing returns on their investment of $522M. After public outcry of $500M of taxpayer dollars lost to Solyndra (another speculative venture) and other politically-favored projects, municipal governments must be extraordinarily careful to find the best uses for taxpayer dollars. I state with confidence that tax incentives of $500M are more properly invested in Aurora’s employers, its retailers, restaurants, and manufacturers, rather than one very large out-of-state corporation. Additionally, I will eliminate business licensing fees and the occupational privilege tax.
